Single H1

One H1 should name the page topic; extra H1s blur the outline for users and extractors.

Pass condition in our engine: The page has exactly one H1.

1. Problem description

HTML5 allows multiple H1s in sectioning elements, but in practice themes emit an H1 for the logo and another for the article. Screen-reader users hear competing page titles. Google can cope, but a single H1 remains the clearest pattern.

2. Most common causes

  • The logo is an H1 on interior pages.
  • A page builder adds an H1 in every hero block.
  • The post title and a “featured” widget both use H1.

3. How to fix it

  1. Keep one H1 that matches the primary topic (often the same idea as the title, not a clone).
  2. Change extra H1s to H2 or a styled <p>.
  3. On the homepage, one H1 for the value proposition is enough.
