Single H1 (WCAG)

One H1 keeps the heading outline unambiguous.

Pass condition in our engine: There is at most one H1.

This WCAG check is part of SEO-GEO scoring 2.2.1, last updated 2026-09-18. About 90 percent of the evaluation runs on the HTML we crawl, so you can verify the same pass condition with a free report.

1. Problem description

Multiple H1s are allowed in HTML5 but confuse heading navigation. Combine with the H1-present check: zero H1s fail that one; many H1s fail this one.

2. Most common causes

  • Logo and article title both H1.
  • Sectioning content each starting with H1.

3. How to fix it

  1. Keep a single H1; nest subsections as H2–H6.
