External source links
Outbound links to sources are one of the strongest GEO citation features.
Pass condition in our engine: The page has multiple external links (full marks at about 3+).
1. Problem description
Pages that never link out look like closed loops. We look for a healthy number of external hrefs (about 3+ on a content page). Affiliate farms that only link to products are a different problem — prefer editorial sources.
2. Most common causes
- Legal banned all outbound links.
- The editor pastes quotes without a URL.
- Links are JS click handlers.
3. How to fix it
- Link to the study, spec or documentation you rely on.
- Use real <a href="https://..."> in the article body.
- Aim for several external sources on long guides.
Test this check
We fetch only this URL (plus robots.txt / llms.txt at the domain root when the check needs them). We do not crawl the rest of the site like a full report.
