Response compression

Same as technical compression, scored again because it directly changes transfer time.

Pass condition in our engine: Content-Encoding includes gzip, br or zstd.

1. Problem description

If HTML is not compressed, every extra kilobyte is paid at text rates. Brotli typically beats gzip for HTML. CDNs can compress even when the origin does not.

2. Most common causes

  • Compression enabled only for static assets, not HTML.
  • Content-Encoding stripped by a proxy.

3. How to fix it

  1. Enable brotli or gzip for text/html.
  2. Confirm in response headers after a hard refresh.

Test this check

We fetch only this URL (plus robots.txt / llms.txt at the domain root when the check needs them). We do not crawl the rest of the site like a full report.

Scoring rules for the full site crawl are documented in methodology. Want every category at once? Generate a free report.
